World's Aging Electrical Infrastructure

The electricity infrastructure in place today for North America "will require extraordinary investment over the coming years. Demand growth remains relevant in several regions across N.A.; however, a more important driving factor is enabling a shift to smarter electricity production and smarter use"- The 21st Century Electricity Grid, Craig Sabine-IC International.

Aside from the large and overall concept of North America's aging power grid, distribution transformers are extremely important to any power distribution network as transformers account for a large amount of total transmission and distribution losses.

Electricity distribution transformers have a relatively long life and they can contribute to substantial losses over their long working life.

An energy efficient transformer is therefore an important means to reduce transmission and distribution losses. Energy saving transformer can save 100-150 Twh/year, equivalent to more than 70 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions. According to the DOE, phasing out transformers and upgrading old ones with new technology could result in annual energy savings worth billions of dollars!

Such problems are not only pertaining to North American, but also other places like Europe! In a report by the Institute for Building Efficiency done in 2011, they stated that "while energy efficiency in Europe is strong and steadily growing in importance, considerable challenges remain. The EEI 2011 survey shows interest in energy efficiency clearly rising along with increasing energy prices, concern for energy security, and expectations of new government policies mandating energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emission reductions. At the same time, the survey shed light on the financial and organizational barriers that are preventing European managers from doing more to improve the efficiency of their facilities".

Energy savings from customer energy efficiency programs are typically achieved at 1/3 the cost of new generation resources. Efficiency programs can also reduce the need to install, upgrade or replace transmission and distribution equipment. It can also improve system reliability and allow utilities to reduce or manage the demand on their systems in some cases off-setting the need to add new peak generation capacity.

Consequently, not only do we need more people in the world to be conscious of such issues and to help by being well informed, we also need continual government/utility incentives, energy cost savings, and energy security.

Here at Synergy Energy Inc., we encourage government organizations, regulators, and utilities to support the creation and expansion of energy efficiency programs and to view energy efficiency as their "FIRST FUEL" of choice!

Energy Efficiency is a cost effective solution to many problems facing both utilities and society, including the growing economic and environmental costs of carbon dioxide emissions.

Energy Efficiency goals can often be accomplished using existing technology, so programs can deliver results relatively quickly in much less time than it takes to construct a new power plant.

We personally invite you to revisit your energy infrastructure and to truly understand where your business' efficiency stands. Investing in Synergy Energy's high quality and highly energy efficient products is the cheapest form of energy you can get and it is an excellent move towards sustainability and environmental protection!

Did you know?

According  to the Department of Energy (DOE), the current power structure suffers from power outages and interruptions that cost the economy $150 billion per outage!

Also, the demand for electricity in the US is growing at the rate of 1% a year, with that pace likely to increase over the next few years. Other estimates put the increase at 6% or more per year, thanks to the population growth rate and the burgeoning numbers of electric/electronic devices now considered essential to people's lifestyles.

In 2009, a study was conducted by Friedrich, Eldridge, York, Witte, & Kushler from the ACEEE on utility efficiency programs. Their study demonstrated that energy efficiency is consistently a highly cost-effective energy resource across a range of programs, states, and regions. Their analysis also identified that "as energy supply-side resource costs are highly volatile, energy efficiency remains a financially stable, long-term investment".

Saving a kilowatt-hour through energy efficiency improvements is easily one third or less the cost of any new resource of electricity supply, whether conventional fossil fuel or renewal energy source.
